22nd April 2024 || Upcoming Pixel-Perfect mod for Retro Gaming on the ASUS eeePC 701

Attention retro gaming enthusiasts! I have exciting news to share regarding the ASUS eeePC 701 and its potential as a retro gaming machine. In response to some enquiries from the community, I am currently working on a VBIOS modification that will disable the stretching of the screen to fit the LCD, allowing retro games to be displayed in their original pixel-perfect format.

The Need for Pixel-Perfect Visuals

Many have expressed desire to experience retro games on the eeePC 701 in their original aspect ratio and resolution, without any distortion caused by screen stretching. I understand the importance of preserving the authentic look and feel of these classic games, and I would love to provide a solution. If anyone has links to source code that may assist, please let me know.

Developing the Pixel Perfect Mod

It will be specifically tailored for the eeePC 701. This modification will alter the behavior of the Intel GMA 900 graphics chip, disabling the automatic stretching of the screen to fit the LCD. By doing so, retro games will be displayed in their original resolution and aspect ratio, ensuring a pixel-perfect visual experience.

The development process involves careful analysis of the existing VBIOS, identifying the relevant code sections, and implementing the necessary changes. I am taking a meticulous approach to ensure that the modification is stable, reliable, and easy to install for users.

Upcoming Release and Support

I am working diligently to complete the mod as soon as possible. Once it is ready, I will make it available for download on my website, along with detailed instructions.

Stay Tuned for Updates

I will be providing updates on the progress of the Pixel Perfect modification through my website and social media channels. Stay tuned for further announcements and be among the first to know when the modification is available for download.

In the meantime, I encourage you to continue exploring the potential of the ASUS eeePC 701 as a retro gaming machine. With the existing tools and resources, such as crazii's SBEMU and the Windows 98 drivers for the Intel 915G chipset, you can already enjoy a wide range of classic games on this little powerhouse.

Thank you for your support and enthusiasm. I am excited to bring this mod to the retro gaming community and enhance your gaming experience on the ASUS eeePC 701.

Stay tuned, and happy retro gaming!

9th April 2024 || ewsFSB download || ASUS eeePC 701 Overclocking and Underclocking Utility for the Asus 701/4G: A Surprising Retro Gaming Powerhouse in 2024

In the world of retro PC gaming, enthusiasts are always on the lookout for the perfect platform to relive the nostalgia of classic games. While many opt for building dedicated retro gaming machines or using emulators on modern hardware, there's an unlikely contender that has emerged as a highly relevant choice in 2024: the ASUS eeePC 701.

Released back in 2007, the ASUS eeePC 701 was a groundbreaking netbook that introduced the concept of ultraportable and affordable computing to the masses. Its modest specifications, including a 7-inch display, 4GB of storage, and 512MB of RAM, made it an unlikely candidate for gaming. However, recent developments have breathed new life into this little machine, making it a compelling option for retro gaming enthusiasts. On the other hand, it's native 800x480 4:3 LCD avoids odd-scale pixel stretching for older games, plus check out that perfect speaker placement... On the left and right of the LCD!

crazii's SBEMU: Unlocking the Potential

One of the most significant advancements for the eeePC 701 in the retro gaming scene is the release of crazii's SBEMU. This remarkable SoundBlaster emulator allows the netbook to run a wide range of classic DOS games, including Doom, Descent, Duke3D, even Jazz Jackrabbit is purported to work on the latest release. With SBEMU, the eeePC 701 transforms into a perfect little portable retro gaming console, capable of delivering authentic gaming experiences on the go.

Windows 98 Drivers for i915G Chipset: Compatibility Boost

Another crucial development for the eeePC 701 is the availability of Windows 98 drivers for its Intel 915G video chipset. These drivers unlock the full potential of the integrated graphics, enabling the netbook to run classic PC games from the Windows 98 era with improved compatibility and performance. This opens up a vast library of beloved titles that can now be enjoyed on the eeePC 701. I hope they work well, as I haven't yet had time to install win98 on my eeePC 701 yet, but I'm looking forward to trying it out!

ewsFSB Utility: Fine-Tuning Performance

To further enhance the retro gaming experience on the eeePC 701, I have developed a basic utility called ewsFSB, written in assembly. This tool allows users to downclock the processor from its stock speed of 630MHz to as low as 270MHz, and even overclock it up to 720MHz if needed. This level of control is particularly useful for playing older games that are speed-limited and require lower clock speeds to function properly. I decided against touching vCore voltage, while these were reported to be stable at 1Ghz for winXP 3D-Gaming purposes, these little original 701s are getting rarer and rarer, let's not put them at risk!

With ewsFSB, users can fine-tune the performance of their eeePC 701 to match the requirements of specific games. For example, I have found that downclocking the processor to around 270MHz brings the netbook almost slow enough to run the classic game Bubble Ghost (still too fast to play it though), which is known for its speed limitations. As usual, any under- or over-clocking utility comes with a full disclaimer: use at your own risk! This adjustment is made by making changes to the PLL clock chip registers, and may cause system instability. Increasing the clock speed above the stock ASUS underclock of 630MHz of the Celeron 900Hz CPU will increase the heat generated from the increased switching speed. The adjustment is slow and steps through FSB values slowly, as jumping directly to a different value causes instability, and can only be reduced by increasing the vCore voltage temporarily, which I prefer not to do.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the ASUS eeePC 701 has emerged as a surprisingly relevant platform for retro PC gaming in 2024. With the advent of crazii's SBEMU, Windows 98 drivers for the GMA 900, and the ewsFSB utility for fine-tuning performance, this humble netbook has been given a new lease on life. It offers retro gaming enthusiasts a portable and affordable solution to enjoy their favorite classic games on the go.

Whether you're a nostalgic gamer looking to revisit the games of your childhood or a curious explorer discovering the charm of retro titles, the ASUS eeePC 701 is definitely worth considering. With its unique blend of portability, compatibility, and performance tweaking options, it stands out as a compelling choice in the ever-evolving landscape of retro PC gaming.

8th March 2024 || Superannuation: Your Key to a Comfortable Retirement

Retirement may seem like a distant dream, but it's never too early to start planning for your golden years. For Australians, superannuation is the cornerstone of a secure and comfortable retirement. Your superannuation is a long-term investment that grows over the course of your working life, ensuring that you have the financial resources to enjoy your post-work years to the fullest.

But why is planning for your superannuation so crucial? Let's dive deeper into the importance of this often-overlooked aspect of financial planning.

First and foremost, your superannuation is designed to provide you with an income stream in retirement. With the right planning and investment strategies, your superannuation can ensure that you have the means to maintain your desired lifestyle long after you've left the workforce. This is particularly important as we live longer and healthier lives, with many Australians spending decades in retirement.

Moreover, planning for your superannuation early in your career can make a significant difference in the long run. The power of compound interest means that even small, regular contributions to your superannuation can grow substantially over time. By starting early and making consistent contributions, you're giving your money more time to grow and accumulate, setting yourself up for a more comfortable retirement.

Another key reason to prioritize superannuation planning is the potential for tax benefits. Contributions to your superannuation are often taxed at a lower rate than your ordinary income, providing an incentive to save more for your retirement. Additionally, investment earnings within your superannuation fund are taxed at a concessional rate, allowing your money to grow more quickly than it would in other investment vehicles.

However, planning for your superannuation isn't just about maximizing your contributions and investment returns. It's also about ensuring that your superannuation aligns with your overall financial goals and risk tolerance. This means taking the time to understand your investment options, choosing a superannuation fund that meets your needs, and regularly reviewing and adjusting your investment strategy as your circumstances change.

One powerful tool for superannuation planning is the "Visual Retirement" app, available on Google Play. This innovative app allows you to visualize your retirement goals, track your superannuation progress, and explore different investment scenarios. By using the "Visual Retirement" app in conjunction with professional financial advice, you can gain a clearer picture of your retirement roadmap and make informed decisions about your superannuation.

Of course, planning for your superannuation is just one piece of the retirement puzzle. It's also important to consider other aspects of your financial life, such as debt management, insurance, and estate planning. By taking a holistic approach to your finances and seeking professional advice when needed, you can ensure that you're on track to achieve your retirement goals.

In conclusion, planning for your superannuation is a crucial step in securing a comfortable and fulfilling retirement. By starting early, making regular contributions, and taking an active role in your investment strategy, you can harness the power of compound interest and set yourself up for long-term financial success. With the help of tools like the "Visual Retirement" app and the guidance of financial professionals, you can navigate the complexities of superannuation and make informed decisions about your financial future. So, don't wait – start planning for your superannuation today and take control of your retirement destiny!

10 Essential Tips for Planning Your Early Retirement

Retiring early is a dream for many Australians and Britons, but it requires careful financial planning and dedication. With the right strategies and tools, like the "Visual Retirement" app available on Google Play, you can create a roadmap to achieve your early retirement goals. In this post, we'll discuss ten essential tips to help you plan your finances and retire earlier.

1. Start Saving Early

The earlier you start saving for retirement, the more time your money has to grow through compound interest. Even small contributions to your retirement accounts, such as superannuation in Australia or workplace pensions in the UK, can make a significant difference over time. Consider using the "Visual Retirement" app to visualize how your savings can grow over the years.

2. Create a Budget and Stick to It

To save more for retirement, it's crucial to create a budget and stick to it. Identify your income and expenses, and look for areas where you can cut back on spending. Use the "Visual Retirement" app to track your progress and stay motivated. Remember to account for any regional differences in the cost of living between Australia and the UK.

3. Maximize Your Retirement Contributions

Take full advantage of your retirement plans, such as superannuation in Australia or workplace pensions in the UK. Contribute as much as possible to these accounts, especially if your employer offers a match. In Australia, you can make additional voluntary contributions to your superannuation, while in the UK, you can consider opening a Self-Invested Personal Pension (SIPP) to supplement your workplace pension. The "Visual Retirement" app can help you determine how much you need to save each month to reach your retirement goals.

4. Invest Wisely

Investing your retirement savings wisely is key to growing your wealth over time. Consider a diversified portfolio of low-cost index funds or target-date funds that automatically adjust your asset allocation as you approach retirement. In Australia, you can invest your superannuation in a variety of options, including managed funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). In the UK, you can invest your pension in a range of assets, such as stocks, bonds, and property. The "Visual Retirement" app provides valuable insights into how different investment strategies can impact your retirement timeline.

5. Plan for Healthcare Costs

Healthcare costs can be a significant expense in retirement, so it's essential to plan ahead. In Australia, you can consider private health insurance to supplement Medicare, while in the UK, you can rely on the National Health Service (NHS) for most of your healthcare needs. However, it's still important to budget for out-of-pocket expenses, such as dental care and prescription medications. The "Visual Retirement" app can help you estimate your healthcare costs in retirement and plan accordingly.

6. Consider Downsizing Your Home

Downsizing your home can be an effective way to free up extra cash for your retirement savings. In Australia and the UK, many retirees choose to sell their larger homes and move into smaller, more manageable properties. This can help reduce your living expenses and provide a lump sum to invest in your retirement accounts. Use the "Visual Retirement" app to explore how downsizing your home can impact your retirement timeline.

7. Take Advantage of Government Benefits

Both Australia and the UK offer government benefits to help support retirees. In Australia, you may be eligible for the Age Pension, which provides a basic level of income support. In the UK, you can claim the State Pension, which is based on your National Insurance contributions throughout your working life. Make sure to factor these benefits into your retirement planning, and use the "Visual Retirement" app to see how they can impact your overall retirement income.

8. Plan for Long-Term Care

As you age, you may require long-term care, such as assisted living or nursing home care. In Australia, you can access government-subsidized aged care services, but it's important to plan ahead and understand the costs involved. In the UK, you may need to pay for long-term care yourself, depending on your income and assets. The "Visual Retirement" app can help you estimate your potential long-term care costs and plan accordingly.

9. Consider Working Part-Time in Retirement

Working part-time in retirement can provide a valuable source of income and help you stay active and engaged. In Australia and the UK, there are many opportunities for retirees to work part-time, such as consulting, tutoring, or freelancing. The "Visual Retirement" app can help you explore how part-time work can impact your retirement income and lifestyle.

10. Seek Professional Financial Advice

Planning for retirement can be complex, and it's important to seek professional financial advice to ensure you're on the right track. In Australia and the UK, there are many qualified financial advisors who specialize in retirement planning. They can help you create a personalized retirement plan, optimize your investments, and make the most of your retirement savings. The "Visual Retirement" app can be a valuable tool to use in conjunction with professional advice, helping you visualize your retirement goals and track your progress.

Conclusion

Planning for early retirement in Australia and the UK requires discipline, dedication, and the right tools. By following these ten essential tips and using the "Visual Retirement" app, available on Google Play, you can create a solid financial plan and achieve your early retirement dreams. Start taking action today, and you'll be one step closer to financial freedom.

Remember, everyone's retirement journey is unique, and what works for one person may not work for another. It's important to regularly review and adjust your retirement plan as your circumstances change, and to stay informed about any changes to retirement policies and regulations in Australia and the UK.
